TUC Condemns Violent Takeover Of LP National Secretariat, Throws Weight Behind Julius Abure

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has expressed their disapproval of the forceful seizure of the Labour Party National Secretariat in Abuja. A group within the party had taken control of the secretariat and demanded the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, citing a court order from the FCT High Court. The TUC, in a statement signed by its President, Festus Osifo and General Secretary, Nuhu Toro, stated that they have been observing the developments within the Labour Party closely and noted that internal disagreements have become public in recent weeks.

Paraphrase this too “There have been multiple court orders, employment of non-democratic means to seize the party secretariat and the use of state institutions to intimidate opponents, all of which are strange to time-tested labour traditions. “Some of these disagreements maybe a fall out of the party’s spectacular performance in the 2023 general elections and its creation of a desired Third Force to drive the development of the country. “While this is understandable, the success of the party has to be well managed to ensure that people elected into executive and legislative positions at state and federal levels deliver on its promises to the electorate. “LP needs to be a well-ordered party so that it can ensure discipline both within the ranks of those elected on its platform and its general membership. “Therefore, while contestations, agitations and internal struggles are acceptable, non-constitutional means and a resort to violence and intimidation are alien to Labour and civilized culture and will not be tolerated.

The statement declares that after closely observing the circumstances, having additional discussions, and examining various court rulings, they have decided to fully support the Labour Party led by Barrister Julius Abure. Additionally, they urge the numerous supporters of their party to assist the National Chairman in fulfilling their duties until a National Convention takes place, where current officers can be re-elected or new ones can be elected. The statement concludes with this message.
